NEUROTOXINS (BOTOX®)

Neurotoxins are one of the most popular minimally invasive methods used to prevent or treat fine lines and wrinkles such as crow’s feet, forehead lines, scowl lines, and much more. Botox®, Dysport®, Xeomin®, & Jeveau® are the most common brand names of neurotoxins in the United States. Neurotoxins relax and retrain facial muscles that cause lines, creases, and wrinkles in the skin due to repetitive muscle contractions over a long period of time.

WHY CHOOSE NEUROTOXINS

Neurotoxins use to be a Hollywood secret reserved only for the rich and famous. Now neurotoxins are readily available to anyone who wants to age as gracefully as a movie star. Neurotoxins have been safely used for more than 20 years to smooth out fine lines and wrinkles of the face but that’s just where they got started. Neurotoxins are now also used by advanced injectors to help heal deep lines and creases in the face, correct an asymmetric or gummy smile, decrease excessive sweating, shrink large pores, tighten skin, minimize acne breakouts, and improve TMJ, jaw clenching, bruxism and headaches.

WHO IS A GOOD CANDIDATE?

In life we often hear that prevention is better than cure and this is never more true than in aesthetic medicine. Men and women in their 20s who want to prevent the lines and wrinkles they can see in their grandparents’ faces are candidates for preventive baby Botox. Men and women who want to improve mild to moderate sagging skin in the brow, cheek, nasolabial folds, jowls, jawline, neck and body are good candidates for this procedure. It is never too late to start retraining your facial muscles to achieve a more relaxed and inviting facial appearance. Neurotoxins are also ideal for men and women who have an asymmetric or gummy smile, suffer from excessive sweating, large pores, and acne breakouts. Neurotoxins can also help decrease symptoms of TMJ, jaw clenching, bruxism and headaches.

WHAT TO EXPECT

Injectable products like Botox and Dysport can be quickly applied in what’s known as a “lunchtime rejuvenation treatment,” allowing you to walk in and walk out without cutting into your schedule too much. Before your injections, your aesthetic professional will carefully examine your skin and determine the specific areas to inject. The injections themselves will be quick and generally don’t require any anesthetic. Most appointments only take a total of around 20 minutes.

RECOVERY & RESULTS

You may develop some minor temporary redness or bruising at the injection sites, but this should fade within the first week. You should protect your skin from the sun after treatments, but Botox and Dysport generally don’t require any downtime or special care.

Neurotoxins start to work within the first 2-5 days and continue a gradual and progressive onset until it is fully set by 14 days. The neurotoxin is then slowly metabolized out of the body over the next 3 months and the muscle gradually returns to full mobility. Once mobility starts to return the lines and creases will begin to return as well. Repeated muscle contractions accelerate the damage of collagen wherever the skin folds. Getting regular treatments every 3 months will allow collagen to begin to repair the deep lines and wrinkles. The longevity of results is directly linked to the dose that is used. Following the manufacturer's dosing guidelines and treatment frequency will help you achieve optimal results. Under dosing will result in the effects wearing off much sooner and individual variances in metabolism can affect the longevity of results as well.

FAQS: BOTOX, DYSPORT & MORE

As we age, repeated facial movements can cause wrinkles to become etched into our skin, particularly beside the eyes (crow’s feet) and between the brows (frown lines). By temporarily relaxing the muscles that cause these wrinkles with Botox or Dysport, you can achieve a smoother, more wrinkle-free complexion once again.
Both products are comprised of botulinum toxin, which functions as a muscle relaxant, and they are nearly identical. The molecules in Dysport are slightly smaller than those in Botox, allowing Dysport to spread slightly more than its counterpart. Depending on the treatment area, this can be an advantage or a drawback. Dysport also usually has a slightly quicker onset, although Dysport results may not last as long as Botox. Your practitioner can help you decide on the best product for your needs.
Generally, no. Most low-face wrinkles are caused by sagging skin or tissue, causing creases to gradually appear. This is fundamentally different from dynamic wrinkles, which are caused by muscle movements. Dermal fillers can restore lost volume in the face to smooth out creases in the lower face and more. Since these products are also injectable, they are frequently combined with Botox or Dysport in a single appointment.
Yes. Our providers are trained to create natural-looking results, so you should never appear frozen, constantly surprised or otherwise unnatural. *
You should avoid pressing or massaging your face for at least a few days after getting any injectable product, since there is a chance that you will inadvertently move the product around and affect your results. However, once your results have fully developed, you can enjoy additional facial treatments. Ask your practitioner for some recommendations.
To an extent, yes. Today, it’s increasingly popular for people to start Botox or Dysport treatments as young as their 20s to prevent the onset of dynamic wrinkles. Of course, nothing can fully prevent the aging process, but you can minimize its visible impacts as best you can.
